Thriller Ideas

Although I saw the benefits of working in a team and enjoyed this as part of the Preliminary task, I have decided to work on my own due to greater ease in organising shoots outside of sixth form and a greater freedom throughout the whole process of planning, shooting and editing.

I want to use as wide a variety of camera angles, editing techniques and technologies as possible to try a create a varied and hopefully somewhat professional looking piece. I also want to stay close to the conventions belonging to the thriller genre to avoid confusion with audiences. I will also be able to incorporate some of the devices and ideas I have picked out as part of my research.

In relation to narrative I am as yet unsure if I should stick with a strong narrative to make the viewing more understandable for the audience, or if I should concentrate more on creating an atmosphere and establishing themes, as not all films display strong narratives in the first few minutes during the opening sequence.

The making process should be a learning exercise as many of procedures I may attempt I have not done before. Although I have now had some experience using a camera and editing footage during the preliminary task, I am not entirely confident with using different settings and techniques or having to take equipment out of sixth form and setting it up without support. I may also have to use devises such as microphones, interior lighting and reflectors.

Editing is the process most unknown to me, as the editing completed during the preliminary task was basic and consisted mainly of selecting and stringing shots together. Sourcing copyright free material for sounds could also be challenging and I will need to learn more about licences. I will be using new methods of research and presenting my work in various formats, using sites such as Prezi, Slideshare and YouTube. I hope that during the process of making my opening sequence I will learn an assortment of skills and even if my final piece is not satisfying I will have learnt how to correct this in the future and not repeat these mistakes again.

As I have decided to work on my own for this project I will have to undertake all aspects of the project, unlike sharing roles out like in the preliminary task. This means more work and planning to complete but also allows me freedom and sole responsibility for the quality of my work. I will have to recruit others to help me during the filming operation for roles such as helping carry equipment or holding microphones.
