I am unsure if I should choose a strong narrative, which sets out to tell a story, or instead create themes and characters which belong within the thriller genre. From my research all three of my films fit into at least one of these categories:
- Pulp Fiction: The opening sequence on its own could be a short story. The narrative present is straightforward for that portion of the film and only seems to have immediate relevance.
- Blue Velvet: The narrative aspect is not very strong in this opening sequence. Although aspects of the sequence may bear relevance to the plot later, it is very much focused on creating a 'too-perfect' and eerie atmosphere and the film establishes itself very early on as a thriller film.
- Run Lola Run: The opening sequence is directly connected to the narrative of the story as it introduces characters and presents the stolen money scenario but resembles more to an overview of the characters and themes at the very beginning before the narrative section of the sequence begins. This is a mixture of both aspects.
